Balluta Bay is the quieter, more residential end, with a small sandy-and-rock beach, the church on the square and the promenade continuing towards Sliema. Spinola Bay is the postcard one: fishing boats, waterside restaurants and the harbour walk that fills up every evening.
Paceville, just uphill, is where the clubs, cinema, bowling and late bars are, along with St George's Bay and its beach clubs. The two moods sit within a few hundred metres of each other, so you can pick a stay that is close to the action without being inside it.
Practically, St Julian's is well served by buses in both directions along the coast, and the ferry from Sliema is a short walk or bus ride away — useful for day trips to Valletta and the Three Cities.
